The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs act was a success.

In 2017 President Donald Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act into law. The legislation cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21% and individuals at nearly every tax rate also received a tax cut. There is a common misconception by the left that only the top 1% received a tax cut, but the numbers don’t support that.

In total, about 65% of Americans saw their taxes get cut according to the Tax Policy Center. Taxes paid by those evil high income earners actually increased by $16 billion in the first year after the tax law passed. Do these numbers sound like only the rich benefited?

By cutting the corporate tax rate, the U.S. went from one of the highest rates in the world to somewhere in the middle. In return companies repatriated or money brought back to the US, over $665 billion in 2018, compared to $155 billion in 2017.

In the two years following the TCJA (Tax Cuts and Jobs Act) that number totaled upwards of $1 trillion. In the first full year following the TCJA, US GDP grew at a healthy 2.9%, posting strong numbers in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 4.2% and 3.5%.

That is not all. According to the Census Bureau the median income in the US in 2019 was up to over $68,000 a year, a nearly 7% increase from 2018. In 2018 there were 38.1 million people in poverty in the US, by 2019 that number dropped to just under 34 million, a 1.3% drop to 10.5%.

Income for Blacks grew 7.9% in 2019. The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act also created Opportunity Zones to increase investments in lower income areas. There was also a record 157 million Americans employed and unemployment was at a 50 year low of 3.5%. The Orange Man was really bad for the poor and minorities wasn’t he?

All of this great economic news was before we were hit with the pandemic in 2020 which led to millions of jobs lost and a plummeting stock market. The Dow Jones reached a record high of 29,276 in Feb 2020 before falling to a little over 20,000 in March of 2020. The unemployment rate went from 3.5% to 14.7%. President Trump signed the $2.2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) into law on March 27, 2020. The law provided relief to those hit hard by the virus, individuals and businesses.

$953 billion was provided for the Paycheck Protection Program which gave relief to small businesses and self-employed workers, allowing them to keep their employees on the payroll. $300 billion was provided for one time cash payments of $1,200 for individuals.

The economy started to recover in May 2020 with the US seeing the largest jobs report in history of 2.5 million jobs, with the unemployment rate falling from 14.7% to 13.3%. In June, the US economy set a new record of 4.8 million jobs created. This was largely people going back to work who were furloughed, still, a very strong and fast recovery. While we did see a sharp decline in jobs and the stock market, the fundamentals of the TCJA and deregulations were still in place.
